Our Services
Dr. Hudson and Middle TN Eye offer the Upper Cumberland area's widest range of eye care, vision correction and cosmetic services for the entire family.
Eye Care
Routine Eye Exams
Young healthy people without a personal or family history of eye problems should schedule routine eye exams every two to three years. As you age, you become more at risk for many common eye and medical diseases. After age fifty, having an annual eye exam is very important. For people who already wear glasses and contacts, a yearly exam is especially important. Most contact lens and eyeglass prescriptions that are more than one year old are considered expired and will not be filled without an exam.
Medical Eye Exams
A medical eye exam is the examination, treatment and management of an eye condition or disease such as cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration and many other potentially sight-threatening diseases or injuries. These exams are treated like any other medical exam and can be filed with your insurance carrier.
Pediatric Eye Care
Eye exams for children are extremely important. 5 to 10 percent of preschoolers and 25 percent of school-aged children have vision problems. Early identification of a child's vision problem can be crucial, because children often are more responsive to treatment when problems are diagnosed early. According to the American Optometric Association (AOA), infants should have their first comprehensive eye exam at 6 months of age. Children then should have additional eye exams at age 3, and just before they enter the first grade — at about age 5 or 6. For school-aged children, the AOA recommends an eye exam every two years if no vision correction is required.
Senior Eye Care
Older adults are at higher risk for eye disease and vision problems, so you'll want to pay close attention to any unusual symptoms someone close to you may be having with his or her vision. That's because early detection and treatment can greatly reduce the risk of partial or complete blindness. Routine eye exams are crucial, too, as some eye diseases arrive without any warning. A person may need more frequent exams (perhaps even more often than once a year) if he or she has certain medical conditions, like diabetes or high blood pressure, which may put him at higher risk for some eye diseases.
Diabetic Eye Exams
People with diabetes or a family history of diabetes should have their eyes examined at least once a year. Diabetes in particular can lead to very serious eye complications. Diagnosis of eye disorders is initially based on the symptoms that a person is experiencing, the appearance of the eyes, and the results of an examination. It is important to know that certain eye diseases do not have symptoms. If you have diabetes, seeing Dr. Hudson regularly is crucial.
LASIK
CustomVue LASIK
WaveScan technology drives the CustomVue LASIK procedure using advanced technology to measure, map, and correct unique imperfections in an individual’s eyes that could not have been measured before. This new form of measurement is 25 times more precise than standard measurements used for glasses or contacts. Due to the Wavescan's ability to take such refined measurements, we are not only able to improve how much they you see (visual acuity measured by the standard 20/20 eye chart), but also how well you can see (contrast sensitivity and ability to see fine detail). Patients who choose CustomVue LASIK with can actually achieve a crisper, clearer vision than patients who opted for conventional LASIK, glasses or contact lenses. CustomVue also reduces glare with night vision over standard LASIK. Higher levels of prescriptions can also be treated with CustomVue.
Traditional LASIK
With Traditional LASIK, your prescription is measured using the same methods that would determine your prescription for glasses and contacts. The information provided from these measurements guides Dr. Hudson in reshaping your cornea. While Traditional LASIK relies on feedback from less detailed measurements than custom mapping, the traditional procedure is effective for treating lower-order aberrations such as myopia, astigmatism and hyperopia.
Surgical Vision Correction
No-Stitch, No-Shot Cataract Surgery
To remove your cataract, anesthetic drops are applied before a tiny incision is made at the edge of your cornea. Using a technique called phacoemulsification, an ultrasonic device is used to emulsify (break apart) your cataract before it is aspirated (carefully suctioned) out of your eye. After all residual fibrous tissues are removed an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) is folded up and implanted into your lens capsule through the same tiny incision. Once inside, it becomes unfolded and positions itself into the correct location. Because of the size of the incision, there is typically no need for stitches. If stitches are required, they will normally dissolve within a few weeks or will be removed.
PhotoRefractive Keratoplasty
PhotoRefractive keratectomy or (PRK) is one of the safest and most time tested laser vision correction procedures available. Before LASIK, PRK was the most common refractive procedure. Like LASIK, it reshapes the Cornea with an excimer laser to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. However, it does so without making a flap and without the use of a microkeratome blade used in traditional LASIK procedures. The benefits of PRK over LASIK are the elimination of flap complications, reduced risk of dry eye problems, and the ability to perform the procedure on patients with thinner corneas or extremely high degrees of refractive errors.
Conductive Keratoplasty
Conductive Keratoplasty (CK) is a safe, non-laser, non-cutting technique approved by the FDA to reduce or eliminate farsightedness and presbyopia in patients over 40. Instead of a scalpel, CK releases radiofrequency (RF) energy through a probe as thin as a strand of human hair, treating your vision condition without cutting or removing tissue. The controlled release of RF energy is done in a circular pattern on the cornea. This shrinks connective tissue in the cornea, reshapes it and improves the way the eye focuses light. The procedure takes less than five minutes per eye and uses only topical anesthesia. Post-operative discomfort is minimal and vision improves almost immediately. In the case of presbyopia, a progressive, age related condition, CK will have to be repeated periodically to maintain the visual results.
Diagnostic
Retinal Fluorescein Angiogram
Fluorescein angiography is an eye test that uses a special dye and camera to look at blood flow in the retina and choroid, the two layers in the back of your eye. Eye drops that make your pupil dilate will be administered. You will be asked to place your chin on the camera's chin rest and your forehead against a support bar to keep your head still during the test. Pictures will be taken of the inside of your eye. After the first group of pictures has been taken, a dye called fluorescein is injected into a vein, usually at the bend of your elbow. Then, a special camera takes pictures as the dye moves through the blood vessels in the back of your eye.
Nidek OPD
The OPD-Scan lll refractive workstation provides the essentials of measurement and analysis data for cataract and refractive surgery. It helps determine the source of the optical pathology and the best strategy for vision correction. It aids in the selection of aspheric IOLs and contact lenses and guides the implantation of toric IOLs such as incision placement and lens alignment.
IOL Master Retinal Biometer
The IOL Master allows fast, accurate measurements of your eye length and surface curvature, necessary for cataract surgery. Because the IOL Master is non-contact (nothing touches the eye itself), there is no need for anesthesia and reduced potential for the spread of contamination.
Wavescan
Wavefront Technology was originally developed by NASA and used in their high-powered telescope lenses to reduce distortion and improve overall visual clarity of images being viewed in space. This same technology has now been applied to our corneal lens in the form of the Wavescan machine. The Wavescan machine maps how bundled rays of light enter and travel through the eye. The resulting Wavescan map illustrates what types of irregularities are present, such as higher order aberrations, and produces measurements that are 25 TIMES more precise than glasses, contact lenses, or conventional LASIK can measure.
Glasses & Contacts
Prescription Glasses
We offer one of the areas widest selection of designer frames for all ages.
Prescription Sunglasses
Style and quality of vision – who says you can't have both? We offer a stylish selection of designer sunglasses for those who want to see their best while enjoying the outdoors.
Contact Lenses
While some people enjoy making a fashion statement with eyeglasses, others prefer their appearance without them. Contact lenses can provide a full field of unobstructed vision (which is great for sports) without refractive surgery. Middle TN Eye offers a wide range of the industry's leading contact lens brands to correct your nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.
Cosmetic
Blepharoplasty
Blepharoplasty, also know as an eyelid lift, can help improve your vision if you have excess upper eyelid skin or have lost your natural upper eyelid crease. An eyelid lift can also eliminate puffy pouches of fat in the upper or lower lids – producing a more youthful and rested appearance. This procedure may also widen your field of vision if excessive upper lid skin is present.
Botox Cosmetic®
Botox Cosmetic treatment is a non-surgical, physician-administered treatment that can temporarily reduce moderate to severe lines and wrinkles for people 18 to 65 years of age. During treatment, very low doses of Botox Cosmetic are administered via a few tiny injections directly into the muscles that cause those stubborn lines. The treatment is usually done in about 10 minutes, and no recovery time is needed. Within days, you may see an improvement that can last up to 4 months.
Juvéderm®
Juvéderm is a hyaluronic acid dermal fillers that provides a smooth, long-lasting correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. It is the first smooth gel formula and only hyaluronic acid dermal filler approved by the FDA to last up to one year from initial treatment. Juvéderm is developed using an advanced manufacturing process that results in a malleable, smooth gel that flows easily and consistently into the skin to provide predictable results.
Latisse®
Latisse is a treatment for hypotrichosis (another name for sparse eyelashes). Latisse is the first and only FDA-approved treatment for increasing the length, thickness and darkness of eyelashes. It is a once-daily prescription treatment applied to the base of the upper eyelashes with a sterile, single-use-per-eye disposable applicator.
RevitaLash®
RevitaLash uses eyelash-conditioning technology to make longer, thicker, fuller looking lashes. It will dramatically enhance the appearance of length, thickness and fullness of your eyelashes. A powerful alternative to eyelash transplants and eyelash implants, RevitaLash is physician-formulated and tested, and ophthalmologist safe. Like liquid eyeliner, RevitaLash is simply applied once-a-day to the base of your eyelashes. Within eight weeks, your own natural eyelashes will look as though they had extensions.
RevitaBrow®
Utilizing the power of peptides and botanicals for strengthening, conditioning and nourishing, RevitaBrow helps revitalize eyebrows, so they look thicker and fuller. A swipe of the applicator can help you achieve a more polished look by causing your eyebrows to appear healthier. When applied daily on a clean brow, you should start to see fuller, thicker looking brows within weeks.
